The power of “YES” is huge. Sometimes in life, always in photography.
I met these clients (who are now like friends to me) back when they were pregnant with their first kids. I have photographed their kids each from in the womb, to newborn, and every year since. I literally get SO excited when I get a text from Kristi that it is time for family photos again. Although I am honored and flattered by their loyalty to me and Sundin Photography, that is not why I love to see them each year.
Kristi and Mike have the power of YES.
Can I have your family stand here? YES.
Can you jump like crazy people? YES.
Can I make a family pyramid? Mike on the bottom and stack your kids on top of you? YES.
Can I make you look like an utter fool in public if I promise it will be a cute photo? YES.
No matter what my hair-brained idea is, they always seem to say “YES!” The result? Their kids are relaxed during every session and ready to have fun. We are silly. We look like crazy people. We laugh a lot. And we get some of my favorite photos each year. Come see our most recent Pacific Beach Family Photo Session…
Do you ever wonder if your family photos will capture what is uniquely YOUR family? Do you ever wonder if your family photos will look the same as the next client’s? What about if they are at the same location? Surely THEN they will look the same. Or will they?
One of my greatest passions is to capture your family in a way that is YOU.
I know everyone wants to look like a magazine portrait, but I also know as a mom myself, that when you look back at those portraits when your baby is going off to college, you are not going to care how perfect it looks. I believe you are going to care that it captured your child’s wild wiggle phase, that you are going to grin when you remember how she was in a “cheese smile phase”, or that a tear will come to your eye when you see the way your kids hugged each other without any prompting. So that is what I hope to capture, every time, every shoot.
Come and see! Check out these family portraits…same location….same month…yet very different family personalities. Can you tell?
When it is cold here in San Diego, I find myself wanting to remember the warmth and joy I find in October, especially from my October Mini Sessions.
August- October are our warmest months here, something it took me years of living here to figure out, but that also means that photo sessions in October, even at 8:30am in the morning, can be hotter than you’d expect.
Here are some of my favorite photos from our warm October mini sessions last year. Each of these families were such troopers with their smiles and easy-going attitude, you would never even guess it was almost 90 degrees at 9am!

Fall Trees: I am hoping for those “I love seasons” people out there this will fit the bill. We can do fall trees here or take a few steps up the hill to do green oak tree background if you are hoping for a more wooded look. The lighting in the morning can be foggy or sunny, but either way the photos will be beautiful!
Cactus Garden in Balboa Park: A little bit of the desert right here in San Diego. Pictures here will give you a modern, clean, and very Californian look, to your family photos.
Magical Trees: If you have a tree climber, this location might be the one for you. In the morning the light comes through the peppercorn trees that are perfect for the climbing ones in your family. One of my favorite hidden areas in Mira Mesa!
Pier at the Beach: You have done beach photos before, but have you done the pier down in Pacific Beach? The structure of the pier makes your average beach photos more interesting and dynamic, perfect for this year’s family portrait.
Mountain and Field: In the morning Iron Mountain is one of my favorite places, with it’s golden field and mountain as your back drop. If you haven’t done field family photos before, this really is a beautiful spot for it.
Spanish Village: For those who love the bright bold colors, this is the perfect location for you! I did my first photo session in Balboa Park’s Spanish Village this last June and I can’t wait to go back and capture your family there too.
Red Barn: In this San Marcos location I found a red barn, classic white fences, tree logs, and best of all beautiful light in the afternoon.
What I love most about the S family is that hanging with their two teenage kids gave me so much hope that maybe the teenage years won’t be so bad.
Their daughter Ahanna is fun and clearly the person who keeps the family laughing…but is also thoughtful and kind. Armaan is such a gentleman, thoughtful, and fun to hang with ( I got a little extra time with him for his senior session! You can see that here.)
I met the S family two years ago and I was just over the moon to have the joy of capturing them again. Come see what we got in the Spanish Art Village of Balboa Park…
I can’t say that I have done a lot of senior portraits. That being said, I was so incredibly flattered when this family returned to me two years later (after taking their daughter’s senior portraits) for me to capture their now senior son!
Armaan is such a gentleman, thoughtful, and fun to hang with…AND he was a great model too! I had a blast. I hope I get to hang out with more fun seniors like Armaan again some time. Come and meet him and see some of my favorites…
I can’t tell you how long I have wanted to do a superhero photo shoot. Even before I had my own boys I imagined getting some brothers in their capes on top of a building somewhere. Something about capturing a child’s world the way THEY see it is so alluring to me. So magical. Maybe because as a mom myself I know how short this time is? Maybe because I love a child’s ability to imagine? I am not sure the exact reason it makes my heart pitter patter, but it does.
So when Leah asked me to do a set of superhero pictures with her boys, I jumped at the chance. I was so elated!! And I love what we got.
If you ever want to capture these sweet nuggets of childhood with your own littles, let me know! I would be over the moon to capture your little people in all their imaginative glory.
I posted about the magical trees last month here, but I have to share the other two families I captured there too! I love these two families so much…and I love what we captured here! I can’t wait to go back to the “magical tree location” again! Come see and let me know what YOU think!

It is hard to say I have a favorite session of all time, but the session I did in Joshua Tree last year is definitely up there. I fell in love with the simple, modern, but beautiful desert landscape.
It plagued me: how do I get the look of the desert without having clients drive 3 hours (one way!)? Then I stumbled across this sweet little cactus garden. I know a cactus background might not be for everyone, but I LOVE what we got for this year’s Holiday Mini Sessions there.
Two families, same location….yet each shoot uniquely them. So much fun!

The D Family:
This year for Holiday Mini Sessions, I brought an old favorite back. It has been years since I have been at this location…but man… I was so glad to be back there again! I truly LOVE the trees here…aren’t they gorgeous?
This family was new to me this year, and they are possibly the most relaxed “first clients” I have ever had! I was beyond impressed and wish they could give me classes. 😉 It was such a joy to be able to capture them…and I had such trouble narrowing down to only three photos to show you! I hope I get to see them again next year!
Meet the H family!
